The Background of the Study
The Nigeria society has not at any time stopped to give a critical look at the root and causes of the dwindling standard of education .
A little share of the blame is always put on the teacher. A little share of the investigation goes to the children themselves .Not many people have ever thought of the standard of the children themselves. Not many people have ever thought social system in drawing back the academic standard of the children.
The discourse will look into what causes our changing societal norms and the relationship to the standard of education.
The child’s moral development is usually of paramount importance to the society and most especially the parents, his social and personality development are directly connected with his moral development. For this reason, the tradition moral education in many African societies is so organized to make the children have access to the acquisition of appropriate social and moral skills by the individual. Considering the Demacative nature of the peoples approach to values in Nigeria as observed by some elders, the period when values were strictly observed and present period which is characterized by flagrant disrespect for most of our societal standards should be looked into.
The people outlook on values and their disposition towards it in the time past should be expired; values like faithful honest, freedom , respect for one another etc. were viewed as sacred things by our forefathers .The elders live exemplary lives .Parents were shinning examples to their children and wards while masters were models to their apprentices. Both individual and general values were upheld. To them, it was a sort of taboo to behave in contradictory manners against these standards.
Because the children were brought up along the line of traditional morality, there was social conformity operating on the level of social comforting mean that a child in the traditional setting is nursed along the lines of societal expectations.
One observation notable about this period was that there were no written laws to guide the people yet they adhered to the set standards their adherence reflected on every person and social institution. Politically there was peace and even when an oba violated any of the norms the people as one would rise up against him. The young they gave high regards to their elders. The wife had no cause to abuse her marital contract friends trusted one another and there was no cause for suspicious or doubt in business. Greatest of all, student then feared teacher that day, the teachers are treated like lord .Discipline regained supreme in all cadres of learning institution. All those being attained during that period does not make it a thing of supervise to see them live in peace. Because of the peace consequent on the discipline, honest, trust, freedom and social justice people achieved greatly students apportioned more time and seriousness to their studies hence the high educational standard and wards.
Statement of the Problem
The upholding of traditional values and order could not withstand the dynamism of social change. Akinpelu sees the development as a shift from the accustomed ‘African human to materialism’’. Thus the new social values and norms tend to foster an individualistic spirit which does not enwove the acquisition of social and moral attitudes that distinguish a principled individual. From the inception of patisan politics and most especially since attainment has been plagued with various form of moral crises, incidence of high level corruption, justice, crime of different sorts and various forms of vice have been associated with Nigerians.
And with each new day, the situation grows worse. The moral decadence widens and deepens. Honestly faithfulness, human right, freedom, etc. no more live with the people either poor or rich, old or young, male female.
The situation is pathetic. Teacher can no more discipline students without being castigated either by law or parent. Both political and institutional leaders now epitomize dishonest, unfaithfulness, force and discipline. They use money to buy the conscience of the populace, in different situations. They rig and manipulate electrons. They make promises which they will never fulfil. Sometimes their disregard for honest living and social justice lead to a total break-down of law and order. Example of such times in Nigeria are in the electrons of 1959, 1964, 1983 and 1992.
Different reactions have been put up by different government in Nigeria to fight these moral anomalies wide spread in the Nigeria society. Such reactions include the ethnical revolution Shagar, regime( 2002). The war against indiscipline Buhari/ Idiaom regime (2004) mass mobilization for social and economic recovery [MAMSER, Babangida regime, (2007) and the current war against indiscipline and corruption Abacha Regime(2003) to mention a few. The involvement of government gives credence to the fact that these social vices have attained such a height of serious concern.
Purpose of the Study
From the fore going it can be seen that value are no more what they used to be, their total neglect as it been manifested as gross adverse consequences on all classes of people it affect us as individuals as a nation.
Considering the changes in value and it unhealthy effects look like an uncourable disease but I believe with that with effective diagnosis of the causes we should be able to overcome the supposedly insurmountable stigma in our society. A cure, for this problem is necessary considering the way and rate of damage it is causing in life of the adolescents who are to stir the ship of the nation leadership tomorrow.
By exploring deep into the effects of our loss of grip of our societal values, even one will see the need for these establishment of these social norms as well as the rationale behind the re-introduction of moral teaching in schools as recommended in the national policy on education. It is said, moral and religious instruction will be taught in all schools.
Significance of the Study
Higher to it has been established that most of our societal values are no more what they used to be. Also, most of the effects on different classes of groups and individuals have been visited. The consequences on socio-political institutions have also been mentioned. It is hoped that readers of this discourse after being able to identify some of the causes and effects of changes in our social norms shall also be able to recognize how these changes affect the academic performance of students, especially that of the adolescents the benefits derivable shall be to both the individuals, adolescent, psychologists parent , teachers the government and the society at large.
Diagnosing the political in-stability in Nigeria, the decay in our social behaviour and the down trend in our economy, it can be safely said that they have their root causes in our unconcerned attitudes towards our traditional values. Therefore, the politician shall know that this adjustment to the societal values only can bring sanity into the political development of Nigeria. The individuals shall realize that their adherence to over traditional norms shall bring back the lost glory of the country both at home and internationally.
A greater glory, will be that the youths, the fathers of tomorrow, shall deviate from their present insensitivity towards establishing a good and solid foundation for the country’s all around development. They will see reason to desist from their present craze for wealth. Their urge will be towards achieving a higher standard in their academic pursuit.
It is believed that any other person too that comes in contact with this study shall refrain from their negative attitudes towards most of the traditional social standards.
