SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The research study is an investigation into the impacts of social media on the English Language usage of students in College of Education. This illustrates how social media has influenced the English usage of the students. The research is a survey research. A set of questionnaire was designed to elicit information from 75 students of College of Education Ikere Ekiti who were randomly selected. The information collected from the students was analysed and explained with examples and illustrations. It was found out that the exposure of the students to the use of social media for various purposes has a great effect on their English usage both positively and negatively. It is therefore concluded that social media? students of Higher Institution in Nigeria.
Background of the Study
Recently, there have been considerable discussions regarding the frequent use of social media tools (e.g, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Xanga, Friendster etc) by high school and college students and the possible effect of those tools on student academic usage performance (Connolly 2011; Hargitai and Hsied 2010, Karmpink & Duberstin 2009). At the core of this debate is whether the growing use of social media by high school and college students actually improves or wosens a student’s language usage. With the expressed continued growth in the usage of this tools by students as early as the elementary school level (Anderson & Ranie 2012, Lenhart 2009) This issues has wide spread implications particularly for the areas of education (e.g identification and use of compatible teaching methods, the design and implantation of complimentary curriculum decisions and the design of non-classroom educational assignments communications (e.g the identification of appropriate channels to exchange educational information among individuals) and English (e.g, the allocation of public resources towards educational and social services activities and the creation of the future business opportunities) (Chen & Bryer 2012, Anderson & Ranne 2012). The purpose of this study is to begin exploring the possible impacts of social media use by university students, contribute to the growing body of knowledge regarding identified linkages between the use of social media and students language usage.
This issue is been investigated in order to provide policy recommendations for university official. By initially taking an exploratory approach, the goal is to identify keys themes, tends and / or perceptions.
From the age old days, distance learning was mainly provided through correspondence. But the introduction of the interments has changed the concept of distance learning programmes are increasingly being delivered through computer technologies but the traditional media is not totally obsolete as it helps in effective learning.
From the above inference, we can rightly conclude that the effect of media is vast on the life of each and every individuals. The media has given particular attention to the need of education and cultural diversity and promoted media consciousness among individual media has entered in every sections of our daily life be it in education, news, entertainment, culture, sports etc.
Moreover, interactive telecommunications systems broadly mean that the instructions and the learners use a variety of technological resources while teaching and learning from a distance. Now –a –days, many universities have come up with the ideas of transferring its on campus learning into online learning.
Statement of the Problem
The inability to exploit the capabilities of new technology has an enormous hidden cost to the society. It is observed that students devote more attention to social media than they do to their studies. It is assumed in some quarters that the language usage is facing a lot of challenges by the style of the style of written English been used.
If they are able to take full advantage of social media for copying, distributing and accessing presentation materials than teachers and lecturers also need to know how to use social mail facilities and computer network servers. Thus, teacher and learners generally do not pay attention to use computer aids and facilities for effective and intensive mastering of English language as second language users. With the areas where computers are regularly used, few will be able to pick up an unfamiliar package and learn how to use it effectively. Though there are no figures to support these claims.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to;
- To find out both positive and negative impact of social media on the English usage of students of college of Education.
- To highlight learners expertive in evaluating and developing appropriate learning resources for English language teaching particular in the area of media use
- To develop an adequate and critical understanding through the means of social media.
- Can the addiction of students to the constant use of social media affect their English usage
- Can the constant use of social media expose students to the appropriate usage of English grammar.
- What is the impact of social media on teaching and learning of language usage.
Delimitation of the Study
The study is carried out among the students of College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti. A cross-section of the students were selected for data gathering and the result obtain is used to generalize the impacts of the social media on the English usage of the students in
Significance of the Study
The study will help researchers with more information on the influence of social media on the students language usage. It will be relevant in assisting students in understanding the diversity of social media. It will prove relevance materials for students and other researcher undertaking similar research. Parent and government will beneficial.
The study shall be significance to the government as it will create in them the awareness of the teacher’s knowledge of media and its effects on the performance on learners especially in English language. Also the government shall be abreast of teachers teaching challenges and strategies of implementing its effective use in schools.
To the pupils, the study create in them the spirit to develop the right attitude towards learning of English language as will further to help their social performance. And as for parent’s, the study shall be of great importance to them as to enable them cater for the needs of their children especially in the provision of that which will foster their education.
Definition of Terms
- Social Media:- They are forms of electronic communication which facilitate interactive base on certain interest, social media include web and mobile technology. Kaplan and Helen (2010) defined social media as a group of internet based application that allows the creation and exchange of user generated content.
- Social Networking Sites:– A website where people put information about them and can send to others.
- Social Networking:– The use of internet to make information about yourself available to other people especially people you share an interest with to sent message to them.
- Media:– Are all those media technologies that are intended to reach a large audience by mass communication. “They are messages communicate through a mass-media or through a mass medium to a number of people” (Bittner 1980).
This chapter gives a general background to this research work. Also, the problem(s) that necessitates this study is started therein. Beyond this, the chapter summarizes the essence and significance of this research work.
This research focuses on the role of social media in the teaching and learning of English languages. It must be noted that English language as a second language in Nigeria has passed through different metamorphoses. This research examines some old methods in achieving the educational aims of English language. Also, this research compares these methods to modern methods especially the use of social media in the instructional process of English language vis-à-vis learners language usage.
The next chapter present the works of various authors on the underlined concept of this research work. Such as method used in teaching language before now and the use of media in the instruction process English language.
