ABSTRACT
Nigeria as a Nation with over two hundred (200) tribes has English as the official language. The language is an international language widely spoken around the world. This research was designed to investigate the methods of teaching vocal reading among Junior Secondary Schools in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State. The focused of this research work is based on students of Ondo State Idanre Local Government. The population of the study constituted of 50 students. Sample random, sampling procedure was used in this study. The sample comprised fifty junior secondary school students in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State. The main instrument used in carrying out the research is the questionnaire. The questionnaire was design in such a way that the respondent would encounter no difficulty in answering the question there in. the questionnaire were given to ten students from each class of who, were both boys and girls. As instrument for the study, the researcher used the questionnaire. Two sets of questionnaire were designed, one for the teacher and one for the student to elate information about the problems facing the method of teaching vocal reading in junior secondary classes, two from both teacher and the students sampled. From the findings of this study the following recommendation are made: Government should make provision for adequate well trained and certificated specialist in English organize remedial course seminars and workshop and improve where teaching facilities are lacking, government should provide. Government should build more classroom and the available ones rehabilitated with provision of good infrastructure facilities to depopulate the already over populated classroom of our secondary school to give room for thorough and effective teaching learning situation. Parent should also come to the aid of their children by providing for their necessary learning materials. Government should make teacher happy by giving them incentives, like prompt payment of their salaries.
CHAPTER ONE
Background to the Study
Nigeria as a Nation with over two hundred (200) tribes has English as the official language. The language is an international language widely spoken around the world. Some of the countries were the language is spoken include united state of American, (The Native Country), the great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Ghana, Sierralone, Gambra, Kenya among others.
According to Brought (1969) English serves as the basic and key to all other subjects. As a result of this, it is pertinent, therefore to student, so as to enhance their performance in all the subject in the school curriculum.
In the school system or society, no student can live or stay in Isolation, hence the need for interaction arises, this emphasizes the need for students to be well equipped in the language
The treading and learning in the classroom situation involves in most cases if not all, good and adequate interaction among teachers and students which these are carried out in English.
According to the National Policy of education (N.P.E) (1997) stipulates as part of the goal primary education. In Nigeria the inculcation of specialist teacher of particular or subjects. Such as language arts will special emphasis on reading.
The objectives of National Policy on Education Includes:
- The strong and self-reliance society
- A just and egalitarian society.
- To build the Nation that full of opportunities for us.
Reading which is defined as interpretation of printed symbols into speech or its mental equipment is introduced to pupils in a school setting (Johnson 1979).
It becomes paramount to observe the performance of students in the teaching-learning of the English language also the cause of vocal reading in school
Statement of the problem
According to Akinwumi (2003) comments on the falling standard of education in Nigeria: from this view majority of students in Nigeria lack effective reading skills. They have vocal reading problems. This informs the research work of this native: An investigation into the methods of teaching vocal reading in selected junior secondary schools in Idanre Local Government, Area of Ondo State Nigeria.
Purpose of the Study
This research was design to identify the problems or problems are in teaching and learning of vocal reading in English in Junior Secondary schools. The study was also designed to give possible solution to the problems.
This case study was also designed to investigate the adequate of English specialist teachers and time allocated to the teaching of vocal reading on the time table.
An investigation was also to be carried out on the interaction between vocal reading and mother tongue interference.
Significance of the Study
This research is carried out with the hope that the findings would be beneficial to people like, the teachers and the students.
It is hoped that the study would create students awareness towards better performances in vocal reading.
It is also hoped that more time would be allocated to the teaching of vocal reading.
Appeal would also made to the government for the provision of adequate and qualified teaching personnel and how to improve the standard of living of the specified personnel so that more people of the same qualifications would be eager to join the profession.
Appeal would also be made to the government for the provision of enough and relevant facilities for the teaching of vocal reading.
Efforts would also be made on how to advice the parents in order to play their roles as promoter of their children’s learning.
Scope of the Study
The research was limited to only secondary schools in Idanre Local Government, Area of Ondo State, for this purpose.
The study would be carried out within the teachers of English language and students most especially in junior secondary classes.
There selected secondary schools include:-
- Ilemobola High School, Idanre
- Olofin Anglican Grammar School Idanre
- Oniseere Community High School, Ifosu
- Ala Comprehension High School. Ala-Eletosan
- Idanre High School, Alade-Idanre
Delimitation of the Study
This study emphasize on an investigation into the methods of teaching vocal reading in selected junior secondary schools in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State.
It is hoped that the finding or investigation would be useful to all other senior secondary school classes in other secondary schools perhaps the state and the Nation as a whole.
Research Questions
The following questions were generated for the study:-
- Are there adequate English specialist in the secondary schools in Idanre Local Government Area?
- Is the time allocated to the teaching of vocal teaching adequate?
- Are there enough and relevant facilities for the teaching of vocal reading
- Does interference from the mother tongue affects vocal reading?
Assumptions
Assumptions represents remise which are taking for granted supposed but proved. The study carries these assumptions.
- Cordial relationship which in turn positively affect students on vocal reading as students learn better from the teachers and the students who takes interest in them.
- The influence of the school on students favourable or otherwise is exerted almost exclusively within the classrooms of the students
- When the basic human needs of the students are given due to consideration by the teachers, there will be increase in productivity on part of the students.
