MARRIAGE EXPECTATION AMONG UNDERGRADUATE SPINSTERS

ABSTRACT

The study investigate and determine the marriage expectations of spinsters in Ekiti State University. Besides, a critical examination was given on how those expectations influence the success or otherwise of any marriage. While comparing the ideal expectations with  the reality on ground as expressed by the undergraduate spinsters in the university, an attempt was made to propose a balance expectation that will promote matrimonial harmony.

Descriptive research design of the survey time was used. Descriptive could be considered appropriately because it focuses on the observation and the perception of existing  situation describes and interprets. The population comprised100 students from Ekiti State University and the students were selected using stratified random sampling and sample random techniques.

The study concluded that  undergraduate spinsters expects love to play both central and significant role in marital relationships. They see love as the consequently, they must naturally look forwards to a relationship that is deeply rooted in love. They agreed that there is conflict between marriage and other life variables. The in-laws for instance are threats to marriage, so agreed majority of them. It was also revealed that sexual satisfaction has a very good role to play in marriage expectation.

          Based on the research findings of the study, it was  recommended  that undergraduate spinsters should be able to harmonize their marriage expectation so that area of conflict can be ironed out by the help of a pre-marital counselor. Also Pre- marital workshop and seminar should be organized at the universities in order to give the undergraduate spinsters a broader look on marriage, this will further enable them to acquire genuine and realist expectations about marriage. It was also recommended that counselling clinics should be established in Nigeria universities by their counselling department to enable them have asses to pre-marital counselling so as to make them rational expectation towards marriage.
