PROBLEMS MILITATING AGAINST TEACHING AND LEARNING OF BASIC SCIENCE IN SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ADO -EKITI
This study assessed the problem influencing teaching and learning of BasicScience in Ado Local government Area of Ekiti State. Four basic research questions were formulated and answered for the purpose of this research work. The sample size of the study was made up of one hundred (100) respondents (Basic Science teachers and students) in secondary schools in Ado Local Government Areas of Ekiti State.
Result revealed that problem facing teaching and learning of Basic Science in secondary schools include, lack of fund which is the major problem confronting teaching and learning of Basic Science, inavailability of qualified Basic Science teachers, Poor method of teaching affect students performance in Basic ScienceandLack of instructional materials which affect teaching and learning of Basic Science
Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that the problems facing teaching and learning of Basic Science are lack of qualified Basic Science teachers, Poor method of teaching, andLack of instructional materials which affect teaching and learning of Basic Science, the study recommended thatschools should ensure that their environment were favorable to teach the subject by ensuring that there are adequate class rooms this will encourage the students to learn Basic Science, teachers should ensure that they handle Basic Science as a subject in such a way that will encourage students to take the subject and Government should employ more teachers and provide resources for teaching and learning Basic Science in schools

Background to the Study
Science deals with nature. It is derived from the Latin word scientia which means knowledge. It provides the knowledge for every citizenry to explore their environment. Science is builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanation and predictions about the universe Oforkansi (2008). In view of this Hyacinth (2004) define science as human activitieswhich involve the organizing knowledge of natural phenomena.
Basic Science is a compulsory subject which is taught in all Juniorsecondary schools in Nigeria. In view of this it was introduced to serve as basement for pure sciencessuch as Biology, Chemistry and PhysicsSenior Secondary School.
Effective teaching and learning of Basic Scienceare the activities which can bring about the most productive and beneficial learning experience for students and promote their development as learners. Effective teaching and learning of Basic Science goes beyond just impacting knowledge but it is a purposeful activity carried out by somebody with a specialized knowledge in Basic Science in a skillful way to enhance cognitive, affective and psychomotor development of a person or group of persons.
Basic Science is an integrated course that deals with the study of living things and non-living things. It also combines all other science subjects such as physics, Chemistry and Biology. According to SharadSinha (2016), Basic Science principally refers to the scientific disciplines of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. Basic Science leads to a better understanding of natural phenomena. It looks for “knowledge and discovery of facts to enable one to understand an already existing phenomenon. For instance, Basic Science teaches the growth of plant and living things
For the teaching and learning of Basic Science to be effective, the Basic Science teacher must have an extensive knowledge of the subject, knowledge of the curriculum, knowledge and understanding of how children develop and how they learn. A teacher is a person who helps others to acquire knowledge, competences or values. Basic Science teacher should possess some teaching skills and be able to plan lessons, manage a classroom, engage students in active learning, present challenging situations to encourage problem solving, collect and monitor information on performance, maintain good students record, provide motivation for students and support cooperative group work.
The teaching and learning of Basic Science requires various teaching approaches and meaningful learning (Ayodele and Adegbite, 2003). The use of inappropriate methods could make students dread science education in later life.In another development, Ololube, (2008) argued that the falling educational standards can be attributed to the use of unqualified teachers such as engineer language teacher, Physics teachers among others without teaching qualifications. It must be noted that without a professional teaching qualification, no meaningful progress can be achieved in the teaching of a subject. Lawal (2003) asserted that skilled and effective teaching are expected from professionally trained teachers for effective learning to take place.
Basic Science teachers are expected to employ the use of teaching aids to support teaching in order to manage and control their classes for effective learning of Basic Science. The use of inappropriate methods such lecturing instead of teaching method could affect students’ performance in Basic Science. Many of the Basic Science teachers do not have a clear insight about the appropriate pedagogies to enhance Basic Science teaching and learning. Most of the teachers resort to teaching with only one major teaching method which is the lecture or “chalk and talk” method in our Basic Science classroom. Sometimes, classes are too large for teachers to manage for effective teaching and learning. This has greatly affected Basic Science teaching and learning ranging from methodology and techniques of teaching (Okoye, 2004).
Statement of the Problem
It could be revealed that many secondary schools, especially the public schools have insufficient competent teachers as well as science equipment in their different schools which affect teaching of Basic Science.
In view of all the problems mentioned already, this study is being undertaken with a view of finding out the extent to which teachersqualification, years of teaching experience and the availability of instructional materials in Basic Science classrooms affecting their teaching.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study was to find out the problems affecting teaching and learning of Basic Sciencein secondary schools usingAdo Local Government Area of Ekiti State as a case study. The specific objective are;
- To investigate the factors militating against effective teaching of Basic Science in Secondary Schools
- To investigate the extent to which teachers attitude affect the teaching and learning of Basic Science in Ado Local Government Area.
- To determine if teachers qualification affect the teaching and learning of Basic Science
- To find out if the use of instructional material affect effective teaching and learning of Basic Science
The following research questions were raised for the study.
- What are the problems militating against teaching and learning of Basic Science?
- Will there be any effect of teachers’ attitude on student attitude on student attitude learning of Basic Science?
- Will teachers’ qualification affect the teaching and learning of Basic Science?
- Will the use of instructional materials affect the teaching and learning of Basic Science?
The following null hypotheses would be tested at 0.05 level of significance
- Problems encounter in teaching Basic Sciencewill not significantlyaffect teaching of Basic Science
- Teachers attitude will not significantlyaffect teaching and learning of Basic Science
- Teachers qualification will significant affect the teaching and learning of Basic Science
Significanceof the Study
This study would be a great benefits to educational stakeholder, teachers, students and researchers.
The study would be of benefit to researchers because it would serve as a reference material when carrying out a research on a similar topi.
This research will be of benefit to teachers because the result of this research will enable teachers to use different teaching methods in teaching Basic Science.
The result of this study will enable educational stakeholder and supervisors (government officials) to check the activities of schools and show that qualified teachers are used.
The study would provide adequate information to teachers in the availability of Basic Sciencelaboratory equipment each schools.
The study would help student to the know problems militating against effectiveteaching and learning of Basic Science and be aware of the particular problem confront their schools. It study would also serve as guide to students who may want to carryout research on similar topic. The study will be an addition to existing literature.
Delimitation of the Study
The study is delimited to the problems militating against effective teaching and learning of Basic Science secondary schools in Ado local government.Consequently, it is also delimited to five (5) junior secondary in Ado Local Government Area of Ekiti.
Definition of Terms
The following term are operationally defined as used in the study
