ABSTRACT

In language teaching and learning, we have a lot to choose from the world of technology; Radio, Television, CD Rom, Computers, Internet connection, Electronic, Dictionary, Applications, Emails, Blogs, Audio cassettes, Power point, Videos, DVD’s or VCD’s and so on. The last two decades have witnessed a revolution due to onset of technology and has changed the dynamism and introduction of various industries, and has influenced the industries, improved people way of interaction most especially in terms of communication in almost every society of the world. The rapid rising and development of information technology has offered a better pattern to explore the new teaching model. The focus of this study, therefore is to examine the important roles of modern technology in English teaching. In doing this, five secondary schools were selected and questionnaire were administered to elicit responses some teachers and students of English. After the analysis of the data, the finding revealed that; (i) some schools lack modern technology (ii) some teachers lack the skills on how to use modern technology (iii) modern technology helps in teaching and learning of English Language. Following recommendations were equally made (i) modern technology should be provided for schools that lack them (ii) teachers who lack the skills of modern technology should be encouraged to go for training (iii) teachers and students should be encouraged to use modern technology because it helps and enrich teaching and learning.

 

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCION

Background of the Study

English is a West Germanic language of Indo- European family. This is the most spoken languages in the whole world which has a vast geographical spread. The use of English language as a means of transferring information which is simply known as communication cannot be underestimated in every social milieu which our country is not excluded where English language has acquired the status of second language and that of lingua franca.

Therefore, users of English language need to be acquainted with the frameworks of the language for better understanding of how the language works (encyclopedia). English is one of the major languages of the world. English language has been functional in nearly every sphere in the whole world and has contributed immensely to: education, economics, sport, politics, scientific and cultural spheres of man and so on.

Language has contributed to education immensely; it is used to preserve, propagate and transmit knowledge from the teacher to learners. The messages passed through the means of language. Language is of different forms which are observed as: Oral, written and sign language. All these forms of language are used in transmitting knowledge.

Furthermore, language is used in political environment by political leaders to address people mostly in or during political rally, conferences, campaigns and so on.

Business is another area where English language has functioned and still functioning. English language is used in business to carry out business transaction between buyers and sellers, to communicate among workers in firm, to constitute rules that guide workers in any business firm, it is also used to write conventions which any customers will follow in a firm and it is also used to solve business problems.

Scientific field and culture cannot be underestimated among those area which language has function in the sense that it is that is, language is used in gathering ideas in scientific findings and their experiments and it is also used for the scrutinizing of the new ideas fetched before approval and use.

Academic sector is another area where English language is used. English language is used in transferring knowledge; it is used to teach nearly all subjects in school except those indigenous languages like Yoruba language, Hausa and so on. Timetables are scheduled in English, meetings are conducted in English, official issues in schools are carried on in English, student are addressed by the school administrators using English language, English language is used among the students to communicate within themselves.

Furthermore, English language is used to communicate to one another, the use of English in the society has gradually put an end to what we called communication barrier mostly in those communities where they have or speaks more than one language. It makes day to day activities meaningful and interesting. English language is one of the most influential and fast growing languages in spoken area widely scattered over the globe. The language of colonization has become one of the most popular language in Africa, Asia and Island of the Central and Southern Pacific.

Finegan (2004) say that English language is the world’s most used in internet, business and political language and with a vast numbers of people learning English as a second language, it is quickly becoming the world’s most spoken international language. Therefore, anyone who wants to progress in world needs to be able to use English language or have the fundamental knowledge of it.

The use of modern technology is one of the most important ways of improving teaching and learning. Modern technologies are tools, machinery modifications, arrangements and procedures used by humans for use. Recent technological developments including the introduction of printing press, the telephone and the internet have lessened physical barriers to communication and allows human to interact freely on a global scale. Example of modern technologies are; flash notes, lore disc, tape recorder, laboratory, iPods, lesson cast, digital camera, image galleries, Bluetooth. These are used by both teachers and learners to acquire knowledge.

The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (2000) offers a definition of term “scientific knowledge used in practical ways in industry” Technology can be most broadly defined as the entities, both materials and immaterial, created by the application of mental and physical effort in order to achieve some value.

Bate and Poole (2003) and OECD (2005) suggest that different forms of technologies can be considered as a continuum, the internet for teaching and learning through classroom aids, such as making classroom lecturer, power points slider available to students through a learning management system, laptops to class and use them a part of face – to – face class to hybrid learning, where classroom time is reduced but not eliminated with more time devoted to technological learning.

The advantages of the modern technology as a tool of teaching and learning is that it helps teachers to have the knowledge of the subject matter through research and teach effectively, it reduces their stress and it gives the students the ability to show his ideas and flow of thoughts and it makes the students to acquire knowledge easily.

In the society, there are many factors such as; pronunciation: this is one of the major area where students experience difficulty, large number of them encounter problem in pronouncing sounds like: /v/ /tg/. When pronouncing steps are recorded into recording tapes in the languages laboratory and students listen, they will improve in their pronunciation. Also, grammatical construction: some students cannot differentiate tenses, word class which affects their appropriation in the usage during construction or sentence construction. These factors are the major ones affecting teaching and learning of English Language in Junior Secondary Schools which must be eliminated by the use of modern technology.

Statement of Problem

English language has affected students in the learning of various aspects, some students are not effective on the use of English language within and outside the school environment. Also, for most Nigerian English learners, the ability to speak and write intelligible and acceptable expression in English language is a big task which has not be accomplished. Most students has problem with the use of grammatically accepted expression. Through reinforcement by the use of modern technology, these problems will be solved and students will be effective in using English language.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to find out how modernization that is, modern technology can be provided in schools for effect the teaching and learning of English Language. This approach paves way for technological method of retrieving or gathering information from learners through computer and internet, phone and the implications of the feedback gathering from the information is for effective teaching and learning of English Language in Junior Secondary Schools. Therefore, change will occur through the information gathered in teaching and learning of English language.

Significance of the Study

The outcome or result of this study will be significant to the educational planner to standardize the use of modern technology in teaching and learning of English language. Students are able to previews each of their lessons and support the text reading with suitable image from the internet and this provides contextual clues and help to determine meaning through modern technology. Modern technology usage makes teacher teach in a principled way. The use of modern technology allows teachers to submit A-Z minute lesson plan strategies, ideas or resources using video, documents Power Point etc. and share it with other instructors which is referred to as lesson casts.

The modern technology is useful for both teachers and learners because it is highly crucial for effecting teaching and learning of English Language. Modern technology helps the teacher to be skillful and dynamic in the impartation of knowledge to the students while it help the student to be more curious and inquisitive which aid them to learn more, this make them to be far ahead of their mate who have no access to it. Educational planners with large and spread out distribution chains use it to educate their teaching so as to create their awareness about the development without the need of organizing physical course.

Delimitation

The study it limited to Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State in particular and also using Junior Secondary Schools. The study will put into consideration and examine how teaching and learning will be effective through the use of modern technology. Using five selected Junior Secondary Schools as a case study.

 

 

 

Research Questions

This study is expected to provide answers to the following research questions;

  1. What are the relevance of modern technology to teaching English language in Junior secondary schools?
  2. Can modern technology be effectively used to teach and learn English Language in Junior Secondary Schools?
  3. Is there any significant difference in the performance of students taught with the use of modern technology and students who are not?

Hypotheses

  1. There is no significance difference between the relevance of modern technology and the teaching of English language in Junior Secondary Schools.
  2. There is no significance difference between the use of modern technology and the learning of English language in Junior Secondary Schools.
