USES OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN THE TEACHING OF COMPUTER IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS
Background to the study
The word is fast becoming global village as result of development in information and communication technology (ICT) the key in this globalization is the computer. Computer meditated communication is increasingly becoming the fact of every life. The rate at which (ICT) is permeating the learning environment is nothing short of a revolution. There are several attempts to reposition teaching and learning in line with the operational paradigm of (ICT) the teaching learning process now being re-designed not only to accommodate but to reflect (ICT) in all its ramifications. In the developed country information and communication technology have change how people play, work, live even learn (Bergenfield 1999).
Particularly in the developed countries, information and communication technology (ICT) have changed how people play, live, work, even learn (Bergenfield 1999). Civilization in information and communication is taking place very rapidly that is gradually becoming a universal culture of communication and indeed a special field of study with limitless horizon reducing time and distance in communication to near zero, there is now E-banking, E-mail, E-learning, E-commerce, internet programs, internet chart, on-line chart, on-line search, E-payment, E-government, E-registration, e-shopping, e-testing. most of the developed countries have exploited the potential of ICT to transform their education process (kosakoskl in 1998). ICT holds out the opportunity to revolutionize pedagogical methods expand access to quality education system.
Different methods of teaching had been intensively and extensively discussed by Roy Barton (East Anglia university), Patrick Fullick (University of Amsterdam). Many years ago, ton has been a leading figure in the development of ICT in science, that is, computer has ceased to be a specialized tool used only by scientists. Computer has now been extended to Education, Commerce, Banking and Governors administration. Computer is now highly valued commodity. He is particularly interacted in the uses of interactive video to support the teaching and learning of computer.
For a developing nation like Nigeria, there is need for a scientific literacy and modern technological like gadgets that carry operational instruction that is scientific. National growth rested solely on the level of science Education. The traditional level of teaching computer have remained largely unchanged, where study only absorbs and desorbs scientific fact that principles limit effective communication.
Technology is a general term for the process by which human being fashion tools and machine to increase their control and understanding of the materials environment. Technology can now be used as a tools to improve the level of teaching and learning computer and it allow students and teachers to acquire new information about the world in the way that is exciting and make a major contribution to the conceptual scientific development of the student.
In the teaching learning process, the child has emerged at the Centre of learning experiences. His life is full of experiences and actions. His senses of seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and tasting from the basis for understanding the environment. It is in this light that information and communication technology (ICT) becomes very appreciative as a companion in the learning process.
One of the common challenges in the uses of ICT is balancing educational goals with the economic realities. ICT in education programmes requires large capital investments and developing countries need to be prudent in the making decision about what model of ICT use will be introduced so as to consciously maintain economics of scale.
Civilization in ICT have totally changed or transformed the nation economics and educational life. However, people like the ideal of ICT because it has changed the way they lives, work, learn and interact with one another.
Statement of Problem
In view of the fact that students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions are immediate sources of manpower for industry and commerce, it is hoped that ICT literacy could have been taught to students in preparation for employment. However, this has not been the case for the majority of secondary school in Ekiti State.
Some of the problem militating against the uses of information and communication technology in the teaching of computer in junior secondary schools are lack of physical facilities, lack of adequate fund from government, lack of competent computer teachers. In some schools where computers exist, the students could not operate it due to the fact that they were been taught theoretical aspect from textbooks and not together with practical due to the fact that the teachers could not operate the computers and inadequate power supply. In view of this, the study intent to examine the uses of information and communication technology in the teaching of computer in junior secondary schools in Ekiti State.
Purpose of the Study
This work is carried out to examine the uses of information and communication technology in the teaching of computer in junior secondary schools in Ekiti State.
The overall purpose of this study is to find out the extent the uses of ICT has, the effect positively the teaching of computer in junior secondary schools in Ekiti State. To accomplish this broad objective, the study will focus the following specific objectives like
