A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PERFORMANCE OF URBAN AND RURAL SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENT IN ECONOMICS.

ABSTRACT

The reason for this investigation is to examine the opinion that urban secondary school students have better performance academically in all subjects than rural secondary school students. However, the scope of the research project was limited to two selected local government area in Ondo-State. To carry out the investigation it was hypothesized that, there is difference in the performance of urban and rural secondary school students in economics. The urban students score better grade than rural secondary school students. Relevant assessment about the subject matter was administered to an unselected sample of 2012 SS II student in rural areas. The scores obtained from the test, the urban school students have higher scores than rural secondary school students. Furthermore, the performance of urban and rural students in the economics from 2008-2012 session were examined the urban school students had better resulted than their rural counterparts. Also, the population and qualification of urban and rural economics teachers and distribution of economics teachers, particularly the graduates in the urban, compared to rural schools. In the course of this research project, the major reasons why the students in the rural area do not perform up to the expectation shall be carefully studied, and some possible solutions shall be recommended, it is hoped that the proper implementation of the recommendation, will enhance the student’s performance in the rural areas
