ABSTRACT

This study compared the academic performance of secondary school students from various home backgrounds. The four different types of home under review are home with literate and illiterate parents, home with adequate learning facilities and home with adequate socio-economic home with rich parents and those with poor parents.

One hundred students from five secondary schools were randomly selected as sample for the study two research instrument, that is students home background survey (SHBS) and record of students academic performance inventory (RESERCH) were developed by the researcher and sued to gather data.

The academic performance of students were categorized into good and poor while home backgrounds of parents were categorized into four different types.

Four hypothesis were formulated and tested using chi-square (X2) statistics of 0.05 level of significance the results are that:

There is a significant difference in the academic performance of students from literate homes and those from illiterate homes.

There is a significant, difference in the academic performance of students whose parent have adequate learning facilities and those with inadequate learning facilities.

There is no significant difference in the academic performance between students whose parent have adequate socio-economic.

There is a significant difference in the academic performance of students from rich parents and those from poor parents.

The finding from the students showed that various homes backgrounds affect students academic performances at school.
