ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the pattern and prevalence of drug abuse among adolescent in secondary schools in ijero local government area of Ekiti state, The instrument use to collect data for the study was questionnaire. The questionnaire were administered on students randomly from five selected secondary schools in Ijero Local government area of Ekiti state.. Available literature were reviewed on the historical aspects of drug abuse, classifications of commonly abuse drugs and their effects, why students/youths abuse drugs and use of drug in sports. This study revealed that students in Ijero local government area took drugs for various purposes due to assorted environmental, background and personal factors data collected from the study was analyzed with simple percentage, the researcher made some recommendations on ways to combat the problem of drug abuse among the adolescent in Ijero local government area. among the recommendations was that Drug Education should included in the curriculum of educational programmes in Nigeria and he should be compulsory for every students to offer. The researcher believed that this is the best way by which the students could be well informed and possess adequate knowledge required about drugs and the harmful effects following if abused.
