AN EVALUATION OF MONETARY POLICY AS A TOOL FOR CONTROLLING INFLATION IN NIGERIAN ECONOMY

ABSTRACT

This research is descriptive in nature and it examines an evaluation of monetary policy as a tool for controlling inflation in Nigeria economy. In recent time, efforts have been made towards reviving Nigeria economy and place it among wealthy nation of the world with little or no effort recorded. Monetary policy influence the volume of direction of purchasing power in an economy and is an instrument of market invention to achieve rationality stipulated objective and otherwise be impossible of attachment of at least in term of volume, speed and direction ( Anyawu, 1996). This would go a long way in assessing the extent to which the monetary policies has impacted the growth process of Nigeria using the major objectives of monetary policy as a yardstick.

This research work makes use of primary and secondary source of data collection. The research instrument employed in gathering information was “questionnaire” the questions were structured to generate the required information for the purpose of analysis. Based on the findings it recommended for inflation to be well controlled in Nigerian economy, the following need to be in existence

  1. Reduction of income tax
  2. Removal of tax on excess profit
  • Reduction of government expenditure
  1. Reduction of public debt
