Background of the Study
Physical education is of great influence in the whole process of -education of an individual and therefore cannot be over emphasised. It is the genuine opinion of educationalist that any education programme that is without physical education is unbalance or unsound.
Omoruen (2007) asserted that physical education is the phase of education which deals with the development and adjustment of individual through carefully planned experience. He further states that physical and health education is primarily concerned with the qualitative aspect of human behaviour. If a man must function as a total organism and wants his learning, every experience to learn its imprint upon his totality, there must be change in his mental, physical, emotion, social and spirited attitudes.
Awosika and Aina (2004) postulated that physical and health education as a WAAEC Examination could simply be termed as a study of man and his naturalistic unlimited movements. Physical education is known as the only subject that comprises of all the several administrative procedure designed to develop individuals, physical and health education trains the student’s notion in exercise and activities, but also mentally, responses emotional and moral adjustment. Educationalist believe the fact that what education starts at birth and throughout development nothing gives the kids as much learning to crawl, stand and walk, these one evidence that he is developing normally.
Moronkola (2000) affirmed that physical education is the major parts of the total education process that ensured advancing vigour, strength, endurance, stimulation of organic growth promotion of social efficiency and teaching of attitude towards recreation and leisure, toward recreation and leisure line physical activities, while Burcher and Kneing (2004) believe physical and health education aims at the development of organic, mental health and human relationship and sense of appreciation.
The landmark in the recognition of physical and Health Education as a worthwhile academic subject come in the wake of the national policy on education (2001) which split out the Nigeria’s philosophy of education from which the basic objective for physical and health education was developed three major document of physical education namely.
Statement of the Problem
Attitude are formed by people as a result of some kind of learning experience if the experience is favourable a positive is formed and vice-versa.
The attitude people hold can frequently influence the way they act in person and large situation for this reason administrators psychologist and sociologist are concerned with attitude development, how they affect behaviour and how they can be changed. This is the cross road physical education as an academic subject’s finds itself. Researchers have been shown that most parents are not happy to hear their children and ward talk about physical education and sports. According to Awosika (2004) Orunaboka (2004), parents are not knowledgeable enough about the academic programmes in physical education. Some non-physical education lecturers at the colleges of education, and universities believes that physical education is not the do well students, they saw it to be the academic drop out, hence parent often says “I do not send you to school into go and play sport, football or jumping and running about on the field “ Young (2002) assents that attitudes which arouse behaviour and sustain or terminate on activity and progress, they regulates on organised behaviour and they lead to the acquisition of motive and stable disposition to act in support of the above Awosika (2005) optioned that several attempts have been made to identify teacher and students attitude towards physical education in WAEC examination but no much positive result. Allen (2004) stated that researchers should use mater o0f urgency to investigate some means by which desirable changes in the attitude of secondary school students could be fastened and indured for the acceptance of physical education as an academic subject. Academic scholars may agree with the researcher, that the objectives of the science curricular include fastening favourable attitude towards science and imparting Cognitive knowledge which physical education as a science courses doing in this millennium. Physical education of the advance level, (Under and cost graduate level.) studies is having specialization course like “sport medicine, exercise physiology sport Equipment Technology, sport facilities engineering, human Anatomy and psychology in sport, sport management, sport insurance, among others after the observation of the content of physical education curricular, Udek and Oruneboa b(2001) asserted that consequently upon this, considerable funds and efforts have been expanded on the research and development of physical education as an academic subject is low.
Physical education was significantly related to students achievement. Also Campbell and Martince Perez (2005) conducted a study on relationship between attitude and achievement in physical education class and observed that the attitude of students toward physical education was not a predictor or achievement and that a significant positive relationship existed between secondary school student process skills achievement and their attitude towards physical education.
