The purpose of the study was to explore students’ dispositions and attitudes toward computer education. The need for the study emanated from the relevance of computer education in human and national development and the state’s interest in Computer for development which has made the study of the subject compulsory for all senior high school students. Explorative survey design was used and questionnaire was the tool developed to gather data from the respondents. The sample was selected through stratified and simple random techniques. The study disclosed that the majority of the students did not have access to computers at home and those who had it have not had it for long. The study also revealed that the female students had more positive attitude towards computer education than their male counterparts. Nonetheless, students did not perceive teachers to be giving preferential treatment to any of the gender groups during Computer lessons. The study recommends that the Government policy on “One Laptop Per Child” must be vigorously pursued to enable all senior high school students to have access to computers at home to improve their competencies and knowledge in Information Technology.

Background of the Study
The aim of computer science education is to transmit data and scientific knowledge. It also aims at building a new attitude that prepares the young to think for them selves to arrive at objective conclusion and also to be able to face a fact changing world. If children are exposed to science early, positive attitude to science at any level is build upon primary and secondary science curriculum and teaching. Therefore, there is need to arrest some enormous problems playing science teaching and learning in our secondary schools today.
Waweru (1982) in Muasya (1992) asserts that the factors that contribute jointly to determine students’ achievement among experts on scholastic achievements continues to be a controversial issue. Many researchers have concentrated on extrinsic factors namely; availability of resources, teachers’ qualifications and teaching experience, the learners’ socio-economic background and learners’ motivation to learn. This research was cognizant of the fact that the four areas had been exhaustively studied; recommendations made and implemented yet performance in exams continues to remain poor. The researcher thus chose to address attitude; an intrinsic factor that also has a bearing on performance.
A student’s attitude towards a subject greatly influences performance. It affects the individual’s organized manner of thinking, feeling and reacting to a study subject (Evans, 1972). Hamachek (1971) observes that an individual’s attitude towards a subject will influence their self-concept of academic ability.
The researchers assume that if the influences of attitudes among adolescents can be identified, they can be corrected at the tender age since the learners are still at the quagmire of personal identity and career path search. Poor performance in the subject by young adults thus makes the researcher seek to establish how attitudes have influenced the situation.
While Computer remains the bed-rock upon which the engineer career is established by imparting on learners initiative, innovation and organizational skills, the failure rate in Computer is so high that there is need to explore ways to reverse the trend.
Statement of the problem
Over the years, efforts have been made to provide computers to both public and private schools, at workshops and seminars organized to train teachers in order to improve their skills and knowledge of computing and computer applications to better their productivity, competency and efficiency in the course of their lessons delivery, but these could not go down well without problems. The classroom is a microcosm of society, and technology is having an increasing impact in schools throughout the country. In the same way that little is known about how technology affects communities in general, little is yet to be known about the effects that increased use of technology is having on school communities, in particular, on the sense of community of classroom learners (Wighting, 2006).
Thus the problems of secondary school education today ranges from low level of computer literacy among staff and students, inadequate computers for practical lessons and lack of internet connectivity in schools where there are computer laboratories and in some instances unsteady power supply; also is the issue of inadequate trained staff/technicians for enhanced computer training and teaching, all these prompted the need to investigate the role of computer in promoting secondary school education today.
Objectives of the study
The general objective of the study was to assess the attitudes of students toward the study of computer. Specifically, the study
- find out how long students have had access to computers
- ascertain the general attitudes of students toward Computer study
iii. determine gender disparity in the attitudes of students toward the study of computer
- ascertain students’ views on Computer teachers’ treatment of the gender groups
The following questions guided the study:
- How long have students had access to computers?
- What are students’ attitudes toward Computer education?
iii. What are students’ views of Computer teachers’ treatment of the gender groups?
– Ho1: There is no significant difference in the attitudes of male and female students toward computer education.
– Ho2: There is no significant difference in the male and female students’ views on the treatment by the computer teachers of the gender groups
Significance of the Study
The relevance of the study is that it hopes to contribute to deepening educationists and Computer instructors’ understanding of student attitude towards computer education and use. The study also hopes to create stakeholders’ awareness of students’ attitudes toward the learning of the new technology. The results of the study have provided data for policy formulation and information to enable educators to counsel male students to improve on their attitudes toward computer education.
Finally, this study is likely to inspire other researchers to embark on similar studies into students’ attitudes towards Computer.
