The study sought to find how family background of students in Ise-Orun local government area in Ekiti State, Nigeria in
fluences their academic achievement in senior secondary school Biology. A survey design was adopted for the study. Fifty senior secondary one (SS1) Biology students and Ten Biology teachers were drawn by simple random sampling from five schools in Ise-Orun in Ekiti State. Four research questions guided the study Data were collected using a research constructed questionnaire and students SSI and teachers school result. The result revealed that family structure, parents’ occupation and educational level of parents, contributed significantly to students performance in Biology. Based on the findings, the study concluded that family background has influence on student’s achievement in Biology.
Background to the Study
The relationship between family socio-economic status and the academics of student is well established in sociological research. While there is disagreement over how best to measure socio-economic status (S.E.S), most studies indicate that students from low S.E.S families do not perform as well as compared to children from high socio-economic status (S.E.S) most studies indicate that students from low S.E.S. families do not perform as well as compare to children from high socio -economic status families. Most studies, however, compared students from across all socio – economic status background to reach the conclusion that low socio – economic status adversely affects a range of educational outcomes. Factors that may influence educational outcomes within particular S.E.S. bands. This study presents data on the effects of home background on student’s academic achievement from financially disadvantaged background and examines its various as affected by a range of other family individual and contextual factors.
Cahill (1996) and Dobson (1996), stated that some ethic groups to be more disadvantaged than others in terms of educational outcomes.
This research is aimed at finding out the effect of home – background on students academic achievement and possible solution to the problem.
1.1 Statement of the Problem
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of home –background on students academic achievement in ISE – Orun local government.
The study examined the effect of the following on students achievement,
- Influence on Ethnicity
- Influence on Gender
iii. Effect of marital instability
- Effect of geographical location
- Influence of housing types
- Effect of types of school attended.
Purpose of the Study
The study is designed specifically to find out and understand how the child’s home background determine his academic performance, the child’s environment have helped to bring about a lowered or increased outcomes in the child’s academic performance.
Thus, this study concerning itself with answering the following questions.
- Does the home background has effect on home environment on the child academic performance?
- Does the parent’s academic qualification has its effects on child education?
- Does parents socio-economic status have effect on child education
Significance of the Study
The study is to investigate the influence of parental socio-economic background, academic qualification, size of family, and the home environment.
The study will enable educational and curriculum planners to take full cognizance of individual difference among children in any teaching learning environment while planning of it will enable the teacher to adopt new dimension approaches while teaching finally parents perspective or their educational qualifications should encourage the children at home and also provide the maximum stimulation at all time.
This study will accomplish the following:
- Reveal the needs for parents to foster in student favourable attitudes towards science subject by making increasing effects to help boys and girls and improving man’s life in our modern civilization.
- Reveal the relationship between socio-economic status and the students academic achievement. This will enable the school authorities and the ministry of education identifying ways of alleviating come of these effects for better educational outcomes.
Assumption of the Study
The assumption of this study is centered around the influence of home background on students academic performance such as sex, students-age, geographical location, housing type, parental educational attainment, unexplained absence, ethnicity and socio-economic status.
This study is to be carried out among some selected secondary school in Ise-Orun local government area in Ekiti State.
Definition of Terms
Performance:- This is a product of effective teaching and learning coupled with personal study. It could either be good or bad.
Socio: This is the nature and social behaviour of society.
Economic: Is the relationship between development of trade and wealth.
Status: Is the socio-legal or professional position in relation to other.
(a) To what extent is the academic performance of secondary school students from small family size differ from students from large family size?
(b) To what extent is the academic performance of students from educated home different from students from uneducated home?
(c) To what extent is the academic performance of student from high socio- economic status differ from students from low socio-economic group?
(d) How does stable home influence academic performance of the students?
The following hypotheses are generated to guide the study,
- Family structure has significant influence on the performance of students in biology
- Parents’ occupation has significant influence on students performance has significant influence on students performance in Biology
- Parents’ educational level has significant influence on students performance in Biology.
