ABSTRACT

This study investigate  the status of geography in secondary schools in Ikere Ekiti, Nigeria The aim of this study is to sensitize government to make geography as a compulsory subject rather than being an elective subject. However specific objectives are to; i Investigate and study the status of geography in secondary schools in Ikere Local Government of Ekiti- State. ii. Find out reasons which should make geography as a discipline to be offered as a compulsory subjects in secondary schools in Ikere        local government area Ekiti-State rather than being elective. iii.

Maintain the existence of geography in Ikere-Ekiti Secondary         Schools rather than being gone into extinction. All secondary schools in Ikere-Ekiti is the population for this study. Questionnaire method of research shall be used as instrument to collect data from the population that will be involved in the process of this research study that is the teachers and the students from the various schools chosen for the study.  As a result of findings from this study geography should therefore be recommended as a compulsory subject in secondary school in Ikere Ekiti local government, Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1     Background of the study

Geography is a science that studies man and his physical environment. Geography is derived from two Greek words’‘ge’ meaning earth and ‘grapho’ meaning I write or description of earth. Therefore geography means the description of the earth. This later undergoes series of changes and re-structuring to bring different definitions of geography. Geography is the description of the earth in relation to man and his environment.

It deals with the study, development, distribution as well as the interaction of human beings with diverse features on the earth’s surface such as its landforms, climates, vegetations, soils, economic resources to mention a few. The development of geography ideas has a very long history dating back into antiquity, records of the earliest scholars of antiquity revealed certain observations and speculations of geographical features and events on the physical world.  Geographical studies of 1950 marks the beginning of modern geography during the 19th and 20th centuries, through the contribution of the great formulators like Fosters, Emmanuel Kant, Karl Ritter, Oscer Pechel to mention a few  brought modern era to geography. They elaborated and made more scientific and systematic methods of observation and organization of geographical facts i.e. methods of collecting, organizing, processing and analyzing geographical data. This development gained for geography a place in the science. Geography is not an arm chair discipline but it is all about practical, systematical or scientifical studies. The purpose of geography today as regards academic should be given a peculiar place in other for it to be able to implement its objectives as the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains of learning to give students a sound knowledge of principles of spatial organization of natural features and distribution of phenomena on earth’s surface to make students appreciate nature and its impacts on the living environment. Also students would be equipped with suitable analytical and technical skills required for tackling problems of spatial planning and development and this will enable students to have a good knowledge of their immediate environment and also specialize in area of relevance in national development.

All the objectives really portray geography as a body of knowledge which can be described as tools for living. In view of these facts if geography is able to actualize a worthwhile position in secondary school as a compulsory subject to be offered rather than been an elective or optional one with sound educational foundation. Therefore geography should be value laden subject in secondary schools, especially in the selected study area, Ikere local government of Ekiti-State.

1.2 Statement of the Problems.

The status of geography in Ikere-Ekiti secondary schools is of paramount important to everybody in the society because, geography plays an important role in the society. It is discovered recently that geography has been made an elective subject in secondary schools in Ikere Ekiti which is reducing the importance role geography  plays in the state. For geography to maintain its status in Ikere-Ekiti Secondary Schools it should be offered as a compulsory subject rather than being taken as elective.

 

 

2.3     Aim and Objectives of the study:

The aim of this study is to sensitize government to make geography as a compulsory subject rather than being an elective subject. However specific objectives are to;

  1. Investigate and study the status of geography in secondary schools in Ikere Local Government of Ekiti- State.
  2. Find out reasons which should make geography as a discipline to be offered as a compulsory subjects in secondary schools in Ikere local government area Ekiti-State rather than being elective.

iii.      Maintain the existence of geography in Ikere-Ekiti Secondary         Schools rather than being gone into extinction

1.5     Significance of the Study:

The overall findings of this research will enable the geography teachers as well as educational administrators to discover cogent reasons why geography should be studied as a compulsory subject in secondary schools. Students will be endowed with good educational foundation and also provide good and deep knowledge about the earth as a whole and their immediate environment which will make Ikere-Ekiti to become a virile town with dynamic economy.

1.6     Scope and Limitation of the Study

In carrying out this research, the study will be limited to secondary school students and teachers in Ikere-Ekiti in Ekiti State, so as to judge their notion about geography as one of the subjects offered likewise their view about geography as an elective or compulsory subjects. Also the area where secondary schools are located in Ikere-Ekiti local government will be visited so as to actualize the objective and purpose of this study by inquiring from them facts about the status of geography in the area. The study shall be restricted to secondary schools in Ikere Ekiti.

The study area would include four secondary schools which shall be selected among the schools in Ikere Ekiti town of Nigeria. The schools are: Ikere High School, Ikere-Ekiti, Ajolagun High School, Ikere-Ekiti, Eleyo Grammar School, Ikere Ekiti and Amoye Grammar School.

 

1.7     The Study Area:

The study area is Ikere-Ekiti where four secondary schools were selected. The schools are; Ajolagun High School, Eleyo Grammar school and Amoye Grammar School. The area is characterized by tropical wet and two distinct seasons predominate from the wet season is between March and October while the dry season starts from November to February. The vegetation of this region is rainforest which supports the growth of trees such as Iroko, Mahogany, Obeche e.t.c. It also supports the cultivation of food crops like yam, cassava ad cocoyam e.t.c. the occupation practices in this area are commercial activities, administrative function, educational functions and farming the headquarters of the state is Ado-Ekiti.

2.4     Research Questions:

  1. Does the electiveness of geography as a subject affects students attitudes or interest toward effective learning?
  2. What impacts does geography as a discipline has over the teaching and learning of geography in secondary schools in Ikere-Ekiti Local     Government of Ekiti-State?

iii.      How can Geography be given its place in Nigeria secondary school          Curriculum?

  1. What extent will geography affects or improve secondary schools in Ikere-Ekiti academically, if it given to be offered as a compulsory subjects?

Geography: The description of the earth and the interrelationship between man and his physical environment.

Curriculum: Deliberate, systematic and planned attempt made by the school to change behaviour of its members.

Vegetation: Distribution of plants in an area.

Climate: Weather conditions or states of a place over a long period of time.

Soil: The uttermost layer of the earth which plat grows.

Education: Imparting of knowledge for the development of the society.

Agriculture: Cultivation of crops and rearing of animals

Resources: Substance in the environment that are useful to man and animals

Astrology: Scientific study of heavenly bodies. Such as stars, moon etc

Population: People living in a particular area of a given period of time.

Migration: Movement of people from one geographical location to another for temporary or permanent settlement.
